“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”
~ Marilyn Monroe
This photo made me spit my coffee out laughing. I love the savagery coupled with the touching sentiment. So funny.
It made me think about my ridiculous humour today. I come from a family of unintentional, unpaid comedians. My mom is hilarious. My dad was incredibly funny and my brother has a quick, dry wit that leaves me laughing so hard I can’t breathe.
My friends are also hysterical. Put them all in a room, and besides amazing humour, I am often the only thing they have in common. I am surrounded by very funny people.
Yet today I was told again that I use humour as a defence mechanism. I have been told that in a negative and shameful way more times than I can count. I wonder about that statement. Do I do that? Is it a defence? Or is laughter really the best medicine? I think it’s time to call shenanigans on ever believing that again.
Being funny in times that might seem inappropriate does not take away from the seriousness of a situation, it just gives it a different twist. Life can be really fucking hard. Why does everything need to be so intense?
I can hold space in a tender, loving and compassionate way. I do it every day with my loved ones and with my clients. But one of the things I am REALLY good at is making people laugh. Especially in times when they don’t think laughter is possible. It soothes the soul in a way very few things do.
I love making people laugh. I love it when people make me laugh. Humour is not a defence mechanism to avoid the uncomfortable. It’s just MY way of looking at life. I find comedy in the darkest moments and that gives me faith that these moments will pass. It’s my litmus test on trauma, tragedy, broken hearts and fear. Always and in all ways.
My life IS comedy most of the time. Living ridiculously and paying attention to it is a core part of my ritual and practice that keeps me aligned with me. It’s MY path so it doesn’t have to be 100% serious. Life is full of moments that are sublimely funny. I am owning this now. I will be bringing more comedy to everything I do from now on.
Live ridiculously. It is my wish for you.
Stay gold Wild Ones.
Thanks for hanging out with me.
